First Line of Defense

Summer Fun

Did you know that your body’s largest and fastest growing organ is actually visible for all to see? That’s right! Skin is the human body’s largest organ and yet the one we tend most to ignore! Our skin is our body’s first line of defense in maintaining health! Skin helps keep us cool in the summer and warm in
the winter. It also keeps all the good things in and all the bad things (like
germs) out!*

Summer is the time of year when our skin is most exposed and we need to remember to take the time to care for our greatest protector! Make sure to STAY HYDRATED! Your skin’s natural ability to cool you down in the summer relies on adequate hydration and moisture! Protecting your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays will help prevent aging, dryness, and age spots. We all know how wonderful the sun feels on our skin after the long winter, but don’t let that stop you from a quick application of sunscreen! What about our lips? Our lips can burn just as easily from the sun without proper protection so look for a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher!** While the last thing you want to do in the summer is add more clothing, try wearing a hat! It’s protection for your scalp and provides you with shade! And last but not least, don’t hinder your skin’s natural ability to keep you cool during those hot summer months! Avoid
wearing dark colors** which will attract and absorb the sun’s rays making you feel much hotter and your skin working extra hard to keep you cool. Instead, wear airy and light fabrics in light colors to reflect the sun’s rays.
